Busy, Busy Day
I did all *kinds* of shit today.
Fixed the thermostat on the Metro, greatly improving long driving trips
Got a buckwheat pillow, a really nice electric meat/veggie slicer, and a French press at Thrift Land for under $17
Repaired and mortared the second set of tiles in the bathroom. I should be able to grout tomorrow.
Got some sweetened condensed milk to make Tai Ice Tea
Made Scones from The New Best Recipe
for the second time
Killed countless mosquitoes with a merciless device that boils their bodies in mid-flight
Beat Samurai Showdown II Twice, once with Jubei and once with Kyoshiro, while waiting for other shit to happen.
Details below:
The Metro has been overheating on longer trips, which has made them 1000 miles I've put on it in the past three weeks pretty annoying. I made at least four visits to auto parts stores to get a new thermostat and gasket. The thermostat was easy, but only O'Reilly's had a mostly-compatible gasket after both AutoZone and Advanced Auto Parts failed to find it. The old one, as
trippedbreaker suspected, was in the fully-open hari-kari state it exhibits when it's overheated. As a result, it wasn't doing anything to stop the flow of water through the engine, so it took a long time to heat up. Earlier this week I replaced the water pump belt, which had been squeaking anyway. Two radiator drains and 8.6 armadas of smoking mosquito corpses
later, the engine is running cool!
The problem that popped up to replace this one is that the normal beam headlights now only come on when the headlight switch is OFF. If you turn the headlight switch on, they go out. Unless you turn the high beams on, in which case they work. This makes driving at night, particularly when you've just made a bunch of samurai repairs to the cooling system, a bit dicey. It's clearly a signal problem, so I'll pour over the shop manual electrical diagrams tomorrow to see if I can figure out which wire isn't working.
The scones were delicious, but slightly under-done. This is because I bought this magical cookie sheet that is hollow in the middle, which both prevents heat transfer to the baked good while acting a bi-metallic strip, warping in the presence of heat. I've put it into the recycle bin, and will use a good old-fashioned stainless steel one next time.
I'm also about to continue my nightly Dynamic Yoga
practice, which I've managed to do at least 5 nights a week for about three weeks now. Not only does it make it much easier for me to fall asleep, but there is a *consistent* effect of making it easier to get up in the morning. And I'm only about seven posses in. It also includes a meditation session at the end, which I'm thinking about doing earlier in the day as well.
After shopping around for a zafu meditation pillow, I found a really nice leather one at Pangaea on Guadalupe. It's exactly the right size for a zafu. I've ordered some buckwheat hulls to fill it, in the meantime I've been using synthetic stuffing, which compresses too much and is hard on my back. However, I found a buckwheat pillow at Thrift Town today that I can stuff into the top in the meantime, and that should help.

All other thoughts fell out of my head as I fantasized the concept represented by that toy.
