About a week after they cashed my check for my deposit, the Merry Transportation Elves at EVT America have finally deigned to acknowledge my $1000.00 contribution to their children's and/or crack habit's welfare. I've been informed that my request has been forwarded to El Factory and that I will be contacted when the vehicle is ready to be shipped. This is good, since it ensures (along with the other $1.5k I still owe them) that a scantily clad-hottie won't be pulling up in front of my house with my electric scooter while I'm gone at Burning Man.

I'm sort of fascinated with why these people do business this way. I wonder what it would do to their cashflow if it was easy for the customers to purchase something from them? (Without being particularly motivated, the way you seem to be?)

It does occur to me that making the process more of a pain in the ass may actually result in better business for them. Huh.

...not being very large or organized. They're only making bikes as orders come in, rather than producing them in advance. I'm sure it slows them down, but it also means they have 0 inventory, which is good for them.

...that they do have me under *contract*. If you look at the EVT page referenced above, you can see the contract. They have a online waiting list that anyone with an e-mail address can join, but by paying them $500 or $1000, you can cut in line.
