Fuck that Microwave noise!

I'm enjoying my second bowl of organic popcorn cooked on the stove in a pot. Microwave popcorn has been such a part of my life for so long now it didn't really even occur to me to question its benefits. However, not only does my organic stove top popcorn taste better and produce zero garbage, but it also has, over two bowls in a row, produced a *100%* pop rate.

Not a single kernel wasted!

Oooh, yes! We have had semi-successful experiments with stove poppin' and even with limited success it's way, way better than microwave popcorn. Yummmm.

Not to mention, you can pop popcorn in bacon fat.

Good thing not to piss of God. Especially the God of Monty Python.

The bulk bin is exactly where this came from.

Sweet Mother of Christ!

I have a tin full of it in the fridge...

I was going to ask.... *grin*

So, I ought to be able to go to, say, Wheatsville, and just buy popcorn in bulk? Awesome!

Do you just put it in a pot with some oil or something, cover it, and let it go?

mmm... You have a lot of food posts. =D

That's exactly it. About two tablespoons of vegetable oil on high (actually found canola to taste better than olive, oddly) in a *large* pot, put fewer total kernels than you think you need in, put a lid on it, and, when it starts to pop, do the shakey-shakey with the container until the popping stops. Be prepared for small amounts of steam coming off the top. Very simple and quick.

I eat a lot of food!

Great to see you again tonight! It's amazing that we don't see each other more often.

In what way were they "semi" successful?

[identity profile] bouncyone.livejournal.com 2008-04-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
So do I!

Wow! We have so much in common! ;-)

[identity profile] errantember.livejournal.com 2008-04-03 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's amazing!

We had trouble not burning the popcorn -- our big pot is cast iron, with a cast iron lid, so it was interesting to try and *check* the popcorn without getting it everywhere. The first time it was pretty burnt, the second time not so much, but not *perfect*. (YET.)

Popcorn popcorn! ::dance dance::

I'm using a fairly standard stainless steel pot, and by doing the shakey-shakey as soon as the popping started, and stopping as soon as the kernel popping stopped, I got perfect popcorn each time. I was also using organic popcorn, which might or might not have made a difference.
