As part of my Big One Year Plan (more later, starts after Burning Man) and after going to the Kerrville Folk Festival for the first time I've been working on learning fingerstyle guitar again. I was originally working with a classical guitar series, but recently discovered this at a David Hamburger CD release session.

I'm only on lesson three, but so far I'm very happy with the results. Each lesson consists of several videos, guitar tab, staff music, and some text. The videos show a close-up of each hand as David explains and demonstrates the technique. It's possible to loop part of it so you can concentrate on watching or imitating it. For someone like me who really likes self-paced computer-assisted learning, it's ideal. Considering even cheap guitar lessons generally run $40 /lesson, this is an perfect alternative. In addition to being one of the best fingerstyle guitar players I've seen, David is also an excellent teacher/narrator with a patient voice and a dry wit to keep things from getting too boring. Pacing of the material is well done, with a few key concepts introduced at each lesson, each one broken out individually and then combined with previous ones.

So far the set has covered a constant palm-muted bass line, alternating the bass between the 1st and 2nd string, and playing various single-notes, double-stops, and chords along the way. There's one song per lesson, starting simple and increasing in complexity as the lessons progress.

David plays with the Grassy Knoll Boys, one of my favorite bluegrass bands. A total riot live, they combine serious instrumental chops with powerful harmonies and appropriately low-tech one-mike-for-everyone vocals into something that's hard to describe unless you've been there. David also plays free solo gigs at Flipnotics on most Wednesdays.
