The redoubtable [livejournal.com profile] terriblelynne and I had a Fantastic French Food Frolic today, resulting in this:

Which, in French, means "Chicken with Wine" or something.

It took about five hours of cooking, with her doing most of the major work and me helping with small tasks. I'm congenitally incapable of taking that long to cook anything, so it was a real treat to experience the whole process, particularly because I didn't actually have to do it. And the result was fantastic!

The best part is that there are leftovers, which I'll be eating for lunch tomorrow.

Thanks [livejournal.com profile] terriblelynne!

It turns out that Jello Chocolate Cook-And-Serve Pudding made with Promised Land Midnight Chocolate Milk tastes chocolaty.

The finitude of this lemon-ginger pound cake is completely unacceptable.

For some reason the mixture of flour, eggs, sugar, and several seasonings I placed in the oven at 325 degrees 75 minutes ago is *hot*!

As long as the candied ginger I have souping on the stove doesn't follow suit, I think we'll be ok.

The Agony!

The despair of slathering down the last of the broiled asparagus and fucking plate full of seared red peppers I got for *free* nearly overwhelmed me, but the sound of the freshly made ice cream churning in it's machine pulled me back from the abyss.

Mixing up the oft-used roasted asparagus recipe from the The New Best Recipe and my Mom's home cooking, I created the following:

5 sticks asparagus, hard ends broken off and discarded
3 slices bacon
2 medium Yukon Gold potatoes
1 cup cauliflower
3 tbsp butter
1/3 cup breadcrumbs

Cut the potatoes and cauliflower into 1-inch pieces.

Heat a steamer to boiling, then reduce heat to low and add potatoes. Cook potatoes for 7 minutes.

Meanwhile, pre-heat oven on broil, with rack 2-3 inches below the heating elements. In a rimmed baking pan, alternate the asparagus and bacon. Sprinkle asparagus with salt.

Add cauliflower to steamer.

Place bacon and asparagus into oven. Bake until bacon is crisp, about 10 minutes, rotating asparagus half-way through.

Meanwhile, melt the butter and mix it with the breadcrumbs. Place everything on a single plate. Pour breadcrumb sauce over cauliflower. Mash bacon into potatoes, then pour reduced bacon fat over potatoes and asparagus. Serve immediately, or later if you like your food cold and kind-of sad.

I got home from the Combichrist concert, which kicked my ass so hard I may have spinal damage, so hungry I couldn't wait until I got inside to start fondling food. I grabbed one of the Ancho San Martin peppers, none of which I'd eaten so far, from the garden on the way in the door. I also grabbed a box of tomatoes from my final harvest yesterday. After various rummagings and general food alchemy, I ended up with:

Chopped edamame, seasoned olives, and freshly cooked bacon bits, with sliced cherry tomatoes, shredded parmesian cheese, and a dash of balsamic vinegar all inside the Ancho San Martin pepper.

*CRUNCH*!

And two of the ingredients came from my *own* *garden* when it's 33 degrees outside. :)

I *really* wanted to take a picture of the literal cornucopia of colors and flavors, but not more than I wanted to eat it *right* *now*!

Pity.

This is the vanilla ice cream recipe from the New Best Recipe with 1/3 cup(too much! bbbbbzZZZZZZZZZZzzZZZZZZZ!) matcha added in. While not as physically dangerous as the chocolate, it's arguably *more* wiring, and tastes *fantastic*. I think for the next round we'll try with 1/4 cup matcha, and make some mochi to make green tea mochi ice cream.

Fresh mozzarella and tomatoes with basil, olive oil, salt, and focaccia, from The New Best Recipe.

I think I'll try it with cornbread again later today now that my third basil plant has taken.

Fish Meuniere with Browned Butter and Lime

Mostly from The New Best Recipe, but using tilapia from Randalls, lime instead of lemon, and chile pepper instead of black pepper.

Totally delicious. I can't wait to try it with actual, fresh fish from a real fish market instead of shrink-wrapped iffies from Randalls!

...with food sensitivities, but I guess my dinner of shell pasta in fresh local tomato, garlic, olive oil and feta sauce followed by local oranges in vanilla-agave nectar whipped cream and xylitol raspberry coulis indicates that life isn't *completely* over.

Those people would likely find The New Best Recipe multiply orgasmic.
