I just wrote this to an independent bookseller on Amazon. The rest of the story tells itself!
---------------
Writing this was unnecessary, but I think you'll find it amusing.

During my childhood, The Poky Little Puppy was my absolute favorite book. I recently found a copy at a local bookstore and bought it. Re-reading it, it rang a few bells, but I wasn't really emotionally connected to the experience. What I *really* needed was to hear my mother reading it *to* me. At first I was going to ship her my copy and ask her to record herself reading it, but then I though, shit, I can get it on Amazon for less than the cost of mailing it with no trip to the post office. So I ordered the copy for her from you. Then, a few days later, I got an order from Amazon. It was the Poky Little Puppy! My first assumption was that I had made an error in the address in my order to you. I went and checked, and, Lo and Behold, the address was correct! So I fired up this message to complain, but decided to double-check the receipt on the copy I just got.

And it was from my Mom. A completely unrelated order!

So you're doing great, helping people re-connect with their favorite childhood memories.

Carry on!

One of the many things I'm doing to prepare to travel more is adopting out my precious puppies. I took Loki over to [livejournal.com profile] dirtwitch's house in Elgin yesterday to see if he would help bring their heavily abused (not by them) rescue dog Willow out of her shell. Everyone got along famously, and evidently Willow was more sociable and playful than she had ever been before. I was treated to an excellent chicken dinner, and got to see [livejournal.com profile] dirtwitch's Permaculture setup on her 18 acres out in Elgin. Next we will try an overnight visit, and if that goes well, a trial adoption for a few weeks. As much as I hate to give up my dogs, I really feel good about how things are going so far, and I know Loki will have a great time with his new family.

Armor!

After failing to dissect the last remaining rawhide chew toy to distribute to Loki and Louie with both a hack saw (too slow) and tin snips (too little torque) I finally resorted to a Dremel with a metal cutting disk. After reading The Omnivore's Dilemma I wasn't planning on buying any more industrially produced meat products, anyway, but the smell produced by this operation combined with my disbelief that any organic substance could be so strong has sealed the rawhide's fate.

Ew.

However, this makes it very clear why various types of armor worn throughout history were made of boiled leather. The chew toy I just cut apart would have handily deflected both a razor-sharp katana or a 30 lb. two-handed broadsword wielded by subject-matter experts. It's also ridiculously light for it's strength, certainly better than most metals and somewhere equivalent to polycarbonate.

Often...

...when I accuse Loki of being a Thief, he attempts to convince me that he is instead a Cutie-Pie.

He's a cutie pie!

Anthony (pictured above!) is not a chew toy!

This is going to be interesting...

Although it's still very painful to hear my new puppy cry and howl when he isn't constantly the center of attention, it's gotten to a point where it's starting to seem funny. I've actually pulled out my SM-58 microphone and my mixing board to record some of the choicer whining. I understand that being taken away from your family is a very traumatic experience, but it isn't being ass-raped by Mike Tyson. Some of the histrionics are so ridiculous you can't do anything but laugh, especially when you're five feet away and can see the total absence of blow torches, thumb screws, or large, superhuman heavyweight champions of the world.

The puppy went to fire practice at Cafe Mundi tonight and was ecstatically the center of attention of at least twenty different people throughout the night. He was also on a leash for the first time, and he did very well. It's still very hard to tell if he's peeing when I take him out for short walks, but it was also *very* cold for such a short-haired dog. He spent most of his evening inside people's coats and shirts, with only his little head sticking out.

There were several excellent name suggestions that I will at to the contest list.

Misery Week continues here on the WB with the arrival of the new puppy! Although he's completely adorable and very healthy, I also appear to be slightly allergic to him, which is exacerbating my fever, *and* he didn't *quite* make it home without shitting in his crate.

Anyone who can design the shitless puppy is in for Big Money$$$.

The puppy is now sharing in my misery (poor puppy!) as it's his first night away from his family of 2 adults and three other froppy puppies, and he is very lonely and sad. And loud.

Really fucking loud.

Poor puppy!

I've been told that if he doesn't chill after a few days, he may not be quite weened yet and may need to go home for another week. We'll see how it goes.

Pictures of the snugly one forthcoming...

No one else has made any suggestions yet on the Name That Adorable Fucking Puppy Contest. If you want a chance at naming him, you'll need to submit soon, since I need to pick something he can learn to recognize.

Ok, kids. It's time to play Name That Adorable Fucking Puppy! I haven't seen my puppy in the past two weeks, but by now he probably looks quite a bit like this:

Actually, as you can see, I got it pretty close to correct. Not bad for sight-unseen guess. Here's the real pic.

I've got a few ideas bouncing around, and I won't make any final decisions until I've had a chance to get to know his personality (or dogsonality as the case may be) but if I genuinely like your name better than anything I come up with on my own, I'll use it.

Let the games begin!

I'll open with "Loki".
