I made this lens cap holder tonight to replace one that didn't come back with my replacement IS-1. Click on the picture for details.

The Sony camera I had before had infrared spotlights build into it to allow it to see in total darkness. Although my new Fujifilm camera can see infrared light, it doesn't have an infrared-only lighting system built in, so I want to construct one. I went to Radio Snack today to pick up a 16mW IR LED and some resistors to make it go. I hooked it up to a pair of batteries, and it works. It's totally invisible to the naked eye, but seen through my camera, it's visible, and can dimly illuminate something about 5 feet away. That's not powerful enough, but I see online LEDs that go up to at least 60mW, and three of four of those would probably do trick nicely. I'm also interested in adding a filter to my flash so it only flashes in IR.

In other news, however, the bachelorette party I shot the other night must have been too much for the poor camera, because now I'm getting "FOCUS ERROR" warnings when I turn it on, and it won't focus anymore. I've contacted the dealer, and will try to stave off suicidal depression long enough to get it fixed.

After getting my filter for doing visible-light-only photography, I found myself wandering around downtown taking, shockingly, *pictures*.

Whining about a few truly idiotic feature choices aside, the new camera *rules*. The only regrets about buying it will belong to the offspring of the design engineers.

...so my MaxMax X-Nite CC1 IR blocking filter came today. I need this kind of filter to take normal, visible-light pictures with my new Fujifilm IS-1. However, instead of being clear, it has a very strong blue tint. If you look a the color curve, which I evidently didn't do before I bought it, you can see that it starts attenuating at 500nm, which is just between blue and green, and slopes down at almost 45 degrees to the cutoff at 700. This despite the fact that it's marketed specifically as a hot mirror replacement for cameras with the hot mirror removed. What does this mean?

The Short Version is that the filter I need to make my camera *not* see glowing red halos on everything makes the picture seem blue instead, so I had to buy a more expensive one that doesn't do this. In the process I discovered a few "features" of my camera that inspire hatred and avarice.

For the Long Version, see below.

I got my IS-1 about an hour before I left for Poly First Wednesday. Naturally I had already read the entire manual online, so I was able to stumble through these shots. The camera is factory sensitive for both visible light and Near Infrared, and examples of both are in this set. The IR-cut filter allowing me to take only visible light pictures arrives tomorrow.

Overall I'm pretty impressed so far. The camera seems to be everything I was hoping it would be, with a very few exceptions, and I'm already getting terrific shots in fairly bad conditions.

I ran out of battery power two blocks from Elysium. :)

Next time...

The filter necessary for my camera to take normal optical shots will arrive ONE WHOLE DAY after the camera itself!

My life is *over*.

If you hear incoherent screaming from the direction of central Texas on Wednesday afternoon, you'll know why.

Yet another cautionary tale that white male privilege is *not* enough.
