...to get [livejournal.com profile] trippedbreakers help buying some parts for the scooter.

When working on the scooter, I though the Big Voltage only happened on the batteries and the cables that attached them together.

I was wrong.

The 60 volts (and enough amps to liquefy a pipe wrench) seem to be grounded on the body of the bike. What this means is that if a any piece of metal, say, my Leatherman, touches both the body of the bike and one of the battery terminals at the same time, electrotechnics ensue. And today, they did. Any my body was (a thankfully small) part of the circuit.

It would appear that in [livejournal.com profile] trippedbreaker's professional opinion, grounding the huge amount of power needed to move an electric vehicle to the frame is Not Done for Safety Reasons. The circuit diagram of the bike seems to indicate that this is how the EVTA R-20 is set up, and I have an e-mail out to them to ask about it.

I had thought I might actually get the bike running today, but having the Leatherman zapped out of my hands plus a Massive Food Coma after dinner put the lie to those plans. I'll work on it more tomorrow, this time with the ground wire disconnected.
