I used to keep a heat lamp in there in the winter, but I put in some extra styrofoam to help keep them warmer, and I didn't feel it was safe to still have the lightbulb at the same time. The bottom line is that the coop needs to be replaced, not fixed, and in the meantime the best solution is to prevent access by finishing the gate.
