So naturally they took all my security shit at work today before they walked me out. That included the card I use to connect to the corporate internet. However, my system at home was still connected. As a result, I ended up chatting with my Chinese counterpart about all kinds of shit until 4 AM. It was fun! And I was able to tell her stuff I didn't normally discuss at work because, well, I've already been canned! It's lucky that it was still connected all day. My VPN connection usually drops several times a day, so luck was with me this time.

And now I disconnect...

Our whole US support team, five people, got axed. It's part of a larger trend of outsourcing to places like China, Russia, and Romania. In my case, I have a Chinese counterpart who probably gets paid 1/2 -1/3 of what I make who was outperforming me, but that's just a smaller snapshot of the bigger picture. I certainly wasn't singled out. Luckily I've never expected any loyalty or patriotism from my company. Multinationals are total profit whore, particularly when they've been the subject of a leveraged buy-out. They've been after our team for several years, making our working conditions harder, trying to take away work-at-home abilities, etc. They've pretty much fucked themselves from what I've found out about the details so far. Their ability to support their products will be in the toilet for the foreseeable future. I was expendable, but several other people I know got the axe were not. Odds are pretty good they'll be contracting opportunities doing effectively the same job available soon, once they realize the hole they've dug themselves.

Hey, if you're interested in Unix server coding, or maybe even some application level Windows work, let me know and I'll do some poking around here.

Thank you very much for wanting to help.

I'm putting together a new set of resumes now. I do have system admin skills on various Un*ces.
