I'm learning PHP, but I haven't heard from anyone that it's worse than PERL.
I mean, having learned FORTRAN and COBOL, I realize that it's theoretically possible to be worse than PERL, but I was Living the Dream that those days were over forever.
PHP is like a drunken CGI programmer read a bit of Perl and decided to make a "web scripting language" by successively gluing on end-user functionality without ever spending a moment to define the language internals and how various bits of functionality and data related.
Wait, actually, that's exactly what happened. I have seriously never seen a worse language.
Correction: they got a bunch of $ after the success of php4 and decided to work out native OO and whatnot for php5. Witness their masterful ability to break roughly half of php4 scripts by the lack of uptake for php5.
