The road first to auto-mobility and later to legality has been a long one for the Echomobile, the 1997 Geo Metro that will soon be mine.

MINE!

First [livejournal.com profile] trippedbreaker and I replaced the clutch, an operation requiring the removal of the entire engine. It was the first Major Surgery I'd ever done on a car, and completing it added a lot of confidence that I could do most of the maintenance myself if I owned one. That project started back when gas was $4/gallon, a place it seems on its way back to now, and a 50+ MPG car is good to own in that situation.

The Latest Excitement was trying to get it legal in preparation for buying it, as both tags are out. My code reader told me there was something wrong with the catalytic converter, which also seemed to be the source of the horrifying rattling noise it made at certain frequencies. After much Swearing, Grease, and Intimacy with Mosquitoes, I finally managed to detach the old oxygen sensor (a job that required my creme brulee torch, we'll note) and install the new converter. Not only does the vehicle now have a new, very Miata-like throaty rumble, but after I cleared the codes from the On Board Diagnostic computer, the CHECK ENGINE light went out!

Ready for inspection, bitches!

Now I just have to figure out how to do the registration and sales paperwork when the owner is in Osaka...
