Where did my teeth go?
Sep. 11th, 2007 05:52 pmOne day after returning from Burning Man, I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed under full anesthesia.
This was not the best timing.
I had a big cavity in one that had been bothering me for months, and that I was forced to go to Burning Man with, and the others looked like they would have similar problems in the long run.
I have precisely no recollection of any part of the surgery. The anesthesia was like a light switch for my conscious mind. I'm mostly off the drugs four days later, and I think the biggest surprise is the reduction in biting power. Subjectively it seems like half my teeth are gone, not just four. I feel like a rabbit! How people manage to grind anything without their wisdom teeth is currently a mystery. Beef jerky, left over from the trip, is particularly challenging. I'm also not sure I was fully prepared for the level of commitment involved. Those teeth are gone forever, and I didn't really even have a chance to say goodbye.
Looking forward to the day when I don't have four bleeding holes in my skull, I'm sure I'll get used to it, and it definitely seems like my tendency to bite the shit out of the inside of my mouth, previously a major problem, should be gone. Taking care of my teeth should also be much easier, since I can get the them all easily now.
