Inspired by the recent InSoc and Cruxshadows shows as well as by Generation Ecstasy, I fired up Ableton Live (v. 5.x) tonight and started disassembling InSoc's hit single "Running." The goal was to break the song down into it's individual elements, such as the bass line, the high-hat, the vocals, etc, so that they could then be re-combined in interesting ways. One major technique I was hoping to use to better advantage is subtractive synthesis. This is where you take a noise that's easy to isolate (like the beginning bass line) and then subtract it from the rest of the song. The result? The rest of the song, without the bass line!

Simple.

Tonight me and my new tits opened the fire set at the Sinsations Erotica Carnival at Red7. The show went really well, and all the acts we got to see before us were lots of fun. Inside were mainly burlesque acts, and outside there live music with Mr. Lewis and the Funeral Five. All six of our performers did a great job, and it looked like a fairly decent crowd, especially considering the event competes directly with both Extravagasm and the Cruxshadows show at Elysium. Immediately after our bow-out, I headed over to the Cruxshadows show, and still managed to get in a good hour-and-a-half of music for the paltry price of $7.

Cruxshadows officially has the best stage presence and showmanship of any band I have *ever* seen. How it's possible their still playing someplace as small as Elysium is beyond me. In addition to the great music and spectacular musicianship, their also *very* interactive with the crowd. All of them are miked wirelessly, so they can come out into the audience, stand on chairs, and jam out in the crowd while performing their shows. If you've never heard of them, I suggest you check them out.

I realized during the show that there is a lot of resonance with Information Society in the 90s, with a much darker, more interactive sound, and about $150k more stage gear. Rogue, the lead singer, definitely seems to channel quite a bit of an updated Kurt Harland from Back in the Day. I'm actually considering heading to College Station in a few days to see them.
