I've been beating my head against the wall trying to install Drupal on the RadioMac for several weeks. I have a bunch of projects on hold right now because I can't get it working, including my official professional site, which I really need up to I can make business cards, etc. I finally gave up doing it fully manually and switched back to MAMP, which pre-installs compatible and tested versions of Apache, PHP, and MySQL. I *finally* got both Drupal 5.15 and 6.9 working on my system! No error messages, no missing GD, no whining about cron running. Both versions are functioning 100% error free.

Tomorrow I will actually add *content!*

I'm also shopping for hosting services. I've had at least one vote for Dreamhost, though I have some concerns about the speed of SQL queries on them using Drupal. For now my websites will probably be pretty low traffic, but I can reasonably assume I will eventually have some social network stuff with 100+ users on it. Any other recommendations?

i've been using dreamhost for minor hosting and have found it to be wonderful. still, i have no clue about your particular needs. i don't use much of the sql and nor do i have a lot of web traffic.

Dreamhost and Bluehost are the ones I hear recommended most often for small undertakings; I also used some folks called "PHPhost" (I think) a long time ago -- I really liked them but they didn't have some of the reseller functionality I wanted so I eventually moved on. Tempting to go back to them actually, ha ha.

Excellent, thank you. Can you elaborate on the reseller functionality? I'm not exactly clear what kind of reselling you mean.

Historically I've only gone with hosts that have the capacity to handle many different hosting accounts under one "master" account, so that I can easily administer a ton of sites. Having to log in separately to each client site when they're all on the same server is a big pain in the butt. Incidently, these days I don't do the same kind of hosting I used to... so it probably wouldn't matter as much to me now. Which tempts me back to PHPhost. But changing hosts is a HUGE pain for someone with as many sites as I handle. So screw that. Only in desperate circumstances. :D

Getting Drupal, which is a very flexible system for putting up websites, installed requires having all those other buzzwords installed, too, and set up exactly right. It turns out that on Mac OS, this is a *huge* pain in the ass. MAMP is a program that basically installs and configures everything for you so it's less of a headache, and using it allowed me to get Drupal to work.
