The Joy of Chickens!

As of 3 PM tomorrow, I will officially Have Chickens.

A good deal came up on the local Permaculture group, and I recognized that my endless string of Good Reasons Not to Get Chickens Yet had begun to stink of habit, so I pounced. Originally I was supposed to get them *today*, but luckily my source flaked out a day, so now I have time to engage in helpful chicken-related activities like, say, building a chicken coop, learning how to treat them, thinking about how to prevent my dogs from killing them, etc.

I'm on Back Yard Chickens even as we speak.

My roommate doesn't know yet. Won't he be surprised!

Security is definitely a concern. They will probably be my rabbit room for a few days so I can go on the upcoming Austin Chicken Coop Tour this weekend *before* I actually build them a coop.

JEALOUS!! :) What kinds of chickens are you getting? I have always wanted to have laying flock of Arcaunas and have done all kinds of research on urban chicken keeping. Can I come visit them?

You can *definitely* come visit them. I am not nearly as well researched as you. You can bring my tomato plant, if it's still alive. My one remaining heirloom is big enough to take clones from now.

I have no idea what kind they are. I know a little of the different kinds, but these are one step above give-away chickens, so I'm working with what I got for now.

Be aware, however, that my chicken contact flaked on me again, and I won't have them until 3 PM on Friday now. If we get together between about 3:45 PM and 8 PM, you'll be able to see them.

Do you live in a house or an apartment? In a house there's a pretty good chance chickens are legal...
