So in The Deadly Assassin, a Tom Baker Doctor Who Episode that aired in 1977, we have:

A virtual battle between two minds taking place in an artificial computer environment made up of the intelligences of thousands of brains called the Matrix.

An ancient, evil enemy dressed in a black monks robe with dessicated, wrinkled skin, who is thrown into a pit during the final struggle in a techo-cathedral-like chamber at the center of immense power.

We may have to have a little talk with George Lucas and the Wachowski brothers...

The genre of Science Fiction is fairly incestuous anyway, and Star Wars shamelessly ripped off many things that came before it. Dune, The Foundation trilogy ... heck, you could easily draw a few parallels with The Wizard of Oz.

The genius of Star Wars, though, is that it took Sci-Fi out of the realm of guys like me, and made it enjoyable to the masses.

Star Wars can't have ripped off Dr. Who, because it was already ripping off Hidden Fortress.
