The Powerbook, which is running off of my new power plug/socket, will consistently come on for about two or three minutes after I reset the PMU. So, all is not lost! During that time, it works perfectly. I'm thinking it might need a new PMU battery. It is, after all, seven years old. I can probably check that pretty easily, as that part sits directly under the keyboard. Also, the only battery I can find is deader than dead, so the system doesn't have that to fall back on at the moment.

So my last major laptop was a 15" Powerbook G4. This series of computers had a really shitty power connector design on an otherwise great machine, and they invariably end up getting to the point where looking at them sidewise makes them disconnect. I'd like to sell this system while it's still worth something, but I didn't feel good about doing so when the connector was in that kind of shape. So I decided to try a little project.

It was fairly involved.

So after soldering on the new, much more standard power connector, and getting all the major components assembled, but with about half (maybe 20) of the screws still lying around on the table, I plugged in the new power connector...

...flipped down the keyboard....

...and hit The Button.

And it CAME ON.

It got all the way through a normal boot!

Then, after I turned my back for a second, the screen went crazy. I pulled the power connector out (there was no battery.)

And now it won't come on anymore.

Fuck.

On [livejournal.com profile] worldmegan's recommendation, I got a Mophie Juice Pack Air to go with my new iPhone 3Gs on Ebay for $50 delivered, $30 less than retail. It's both a hardshell case and a spare battery, effectively doubling my battery life. It also pulls power from the shell first, saving wear on your hard-to-replace iPhone battery.

What's far *more* exciting, however, is winning the bid on a MacBook Pro to replace my aging G4 Powerbook. This refurb from Apple is what I wanted. By buying it used on Ebay, I'm saving over $700, even after the memory and HD upgrades I'll need. My final system will be identical to the Apple refurb, except the processor will be about 15% slower at 2.4 Ghz.

I think I'd rather have the $700, thanks.

My final config will be: Macbook Pro, Intel Core-2 Duo 2.4 Ghz, 500 MB HD, 4 GB of main memory

It also comes with over a year of Applecare, which really helps alleviate the fear of getting a used product on Ebay. If something on it is unexpectedly broken, Apple fixes it, no questions asked.

...that it's now probably somehow possible to visually identify me as a Mac user.

I've been running out of space on my Powerbook for months, so I finally broke down and replaced the 80GB Hitachi with a new 250 GB Western Digital. It took about four hours to copy over the system using an intermediary firewire drive. I can now restore a huge section of my iPhoto library I was forced to move elsewhere due to space constraints. The new drive sounds slightly different, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Steps to Success This Evening:

NOTE: Those uninterested in using their Macintoshes to write VBScript programs that probe for non-existent hardware on a version of Windows XP claustrophobically trapped in a window may wish to look elsewhere for entertainment.

1) Rig home Windows XP PC for Remote Desktop Access so I can work on my VBScript project for work using my Macintosh from, say, Epoch.
